“Art isn't always about who the artist is.

But rather who catches his attention at that moment. “

~David J. Vanderpool. 2012

David was one of the first artists I got to know when I first began showing my own male nude imagery on the Red Bubble site.  We seem to have a mutual fascination with each other’s work and style.  I was obsessed with light and how my subjects emerged out of the darkness.  He obsessed with the subtle shading of his gradation through intricate line and movement of his pencils.  I was always amazed how lifelike these lines and strokes become as fine art often taking on the subtitles and appearing to be so photographic in their overall impression.

One of the first images I collected was his image of Mehadi.  To me, it contained art of the male nude in an almost perfect form, composition, light, and shading.  We became friends and began to exchange ideas and talked about our own conception of what male art should become.  I have always admired David’s work and followed him for many years, collecting most of his published books.  When I meet young artists interested in drawing as an art form I give them a copy of one of David’s books. At one point David asked if he could use one of my images for the inspiration for a piece he wanted to create.  I sent him a copy of the image and he did an exceptional rendering of a piece he later called Rodeo.

This is taken from a bio about David and quotes from some of the many sites featuring his work.

“I am a professional artist, as well as published author, interested in meeting other creative people (artists, writers, photographers and models) who can network together to offer each other ways to advance in our goals and careers. And if nothing else, at least have some fun getting to know one another. My style in drawing has changed through the years, as a result of always trying to improve from the last attempt. Much like life in general, if you don't learn from your mistakes you can't move on and do better. Granted - black and white graphite pencil drawings aren't well accepted in art galleries because of the time they take to create, and the fact that they ARE black and white but I am holding off a few selected art galleries who are strong enough to stand up to Others who are tell them what's marketable or not, and introduce the Word to what has become a lost art form. Masterfully crafted pencil drawings. FYI: I draw with all lines. I never smear the graphite or use a traditional blending tool. “

“Drawing is one of the first skills children pick up and one of their first experiences in acceptance and recognition. Instantly the refrigerator door becomes their gallery – a place to show off their latest masterpiece as new pieces are added daily. It’s as if the refrigerator was created for just that purpose.”

“I learned early in my childhood I could get the attention and acceptance I needed just by holding a pencil and letting it work its magic on paper. And of course when people would ask how did I do that, I’d simply say “It’s all in the pencil.” Which really is pretty much close to being the truth. Without the right tool your drawing would be dull and flat – no life to it no matter how much you wished you could do better.”

“With time passing came change – My style in drawing has changed through the years, as a result of always trying to improve from the last attempt. Much like life in general, if you don’t learn from your mistakes you can’t move on and do better.”
