End of the Relationship Series #641
Every once in a while you create an image that utterly defines who you are. Today’s portfolio image is called “End of the Relationship #641.“ First of all this was the first time I had shot a couple together, both of the subjects I had been working with individually for several sessions. Today’s portfolio choice is of Travis standing in the window, completely exposed. This is the natural spring morning light. My studio is designed in such a way that there is no direct light in to my shooting room, but I have built in a bank of windows to the east that are slightly shaded by the trees. [read more]

Today I am a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Last night was a very sleepless night and I woke up not feeling very refreshed. It’s going to be another hot day. I should be elated today because the project has reached 50,000 visits since it began a mere seven months ago. Somehow this feels like this should be a major accomplishment. I have been obsessively printing the past couple of days and I lose focus on everything else around me. [read more]

Yesterday the stress levels just escalated when I resumed the printing process again on the final images. I only have 6 images to finish on the portfolio series and for some reason the software stopped communication with the printer so I could no longer make adjustments. It was like the control panels had completely disappeared. [read more]

Montana Rodeo #128
I am taking today off and going to go hang with my family at the Mineral County Fair in my old hometown of Superior, Montana. This is kind of a traditional day that I get to spend with my family. There is also a rodeo and I love to photograph rodeos. I am able to get up on the chutes with the cowboys and often get to shoot it from their perspective. I have hundreds and hundreds of images of “back stage” at the rodeo. [read more]

Why is when you think you have some things under control it always just seems to slip out of your grasp? I have been working non-stop to get this trip underway and it’s taking a lot more time then I ever imagined. It’s so dang much work. I am building some new PDF portfolios to put on line because some of the publishers want to have an on line submission for review first. [read more]

As I look back through the history of my images, I see a sort of darkness in the images I had not recognized before. Someone commented the other day that they did not think my images where erotic at all, yet that is all I see. There is a boldness to stand on the edge and look inward on one’s own life and ask someone to reveal themselves to you. [read more]

Terry - self portrait with cowboy hat
Somehow the best parts of me are the west and I have got to somehow bring the west with me on this trip. Traveling with a cowboy hat on modern planes is near impossible. But when I look back at the seemingly impossible task of actually going to France and Germany to show my goods this seemingly impossible task of getting my hat to Paris should become an easier feat, I know I must somehow figure it out. I met another photographer yesterday and spent the entire afternoon and into the evening talking with him. He has been in Paris for 5 years and his work seems to center around experimental black and white architecture. This city is so full of fascinating structure with a beautiful balance of form and function. It seems to be a city that continually renews itself, through either refurbish what is historic or complete destruction and rebuilding of something new and original. [read more]

Berlin is having a surprising impact on my self-image or better yet the image of myself. I am still out of sync with the time zones and it makes me feel displaced. I tend to stay up half the night and sleep most of the morning. But yesterday was a day of rest and get back on track. I had one mission for the day and that was to meet the publishers for a 17:00 rendezvous. [read more]

The best evening in Berlin yet. I was able to go meet Franz Werner and Dragan Simicevic. We met at a café where Dragan currently has a show. He is an artist I have been following for quite some time. Though he is gay he does not shoot gay. His images and models are filled with a deep mystery and his images draw the viewer deeper into the subject. He has a very strong connection to the models and the images are captivating. [read more]

It always excites me to begin a new year. I spent a good portion of yesterday doing my annual year-end summary, which I have done since I was a kid. It is a difficult time to be in Paris because so many people are on holiday. I spent the day visiting galleries that were open, but many of them are closed. It is changing my perception of how photographic art is presented and sold. Many of the galleries here only feature the artist who runs the gallery, so it becomes merely a showcase of their work. Then there seems to be galleries that show many artists, but you must really look for what you like. [read more]

Paris is a difficult city to get to know. It seems everywhere you go there is something new and interesting, especially on the side streets that sometimes feel deserted. As I wander, it’s making me feel sad and missing my home. I visited a Museum of eroticism near the Moulin Rouge yesterday up in an area called Montmartre. Spent about 2 hours looking at the many level of erotic artifacts, painting, sketching and photography. [read more]

It is my last day in Paris and as I sit in the beautiful garden it has begun to rain, not just a light rain, but also a heavy rain. Well here it is my last night in Paris. Wow what an awesome day. I leave tomorrow for 20 hours of travel to return to my mountain home in Montana. Today I just wandered around my favorite parts of the city and photographed all day. I felt at peace today, though I was a bit unnerved by my lack of communication the past couple of days. This year and this project have really been a sort of coming to terms with my own identity crisis; but now two thirds of my way through it I cannot tell if I am actually resolving or worsening the impact it’s actually having on me. There is a greater acceptance of where I currently reside on the issues of being a gay man coming to terms with middle age, being creative and living in Montana. [read more]

I am beginning to see and recognize that I have always lived in the shadow of others. It feels most of my life has been connected to something or someone else.
