I am deeply drawn to the strong contrast between light and dark. This style is defined by a term called chiaroscuro. Webster defines Chiaroscuro as the “interplay or contrast of dissimilar qualities (as of mood or character)”. This definition best exemplifies me as a person, though the term is generally not associated with psychology it is a perfect description of my personality. [read more]

It always excites me to begin a new year. I spent a good portion of yesterday doing my annual year-end summary, which I have done since I was a kid. New Year's morning I spend a couple of hours writing a couple of pages about everything I had accomplished through out the course of the previous year. [read more]

I am not exactly sure of my strong connection to Caravaggio. These is a deep spirituality that exists in the images that has a strong pull on my subconscious and create a sort of cathartic effect on me emotionally. It’s not merely about the lighting, which is brilliant, but it is about humanity revealed on the canvas. Many of the images draw on religious stories, but instead of elevating them to an ethereal level he has imbued them with an earthly reality. [read more]

We have finally got the news that Man Art will be removed from the Internet within the next couple of days. Today I am filled with joy to look back and read all the comments on the work I submitted less than a year ago. I am eternally thankful for the amazing people I have met on this site and the encouragement you have given me to grow. Thanks for seeing things in me and my imagery that I couldn’t, and for helping me to recognize it. [read more]

Today is Super Bowl Sunday in the USA. Where the two mighty North American conferences face off for the battle of the best. Today it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Green Bay Packers. But more importantly it is a long-standing tradition among many Americans to get together once a year and have a party with great friends. Many think Super Bowl Sunday should become a national holiday with the following day off for recovery. [read more]

Several months back I read an interesting story in The Atlantic Magazine about a woman who had formed a voyeuristic fascination to a woman, an acquaintance she had met at a job and followed on Facebook for several years. Though she had never had any contact with the woman she lived vicariously though her postings and followed her through all her ups and downs and relationships and a forthcoming marriage.

I think there is a raw sensuality at the core of all of us. It doesn’t matter if we are 20 or 60, everyone has it. It’s just a matter of seeing and recognizing within our selves and others. Most often it is not apparent on the surface and remains hidden. For some, I as a photographer, can access it more readily than others; but photographers by design are supposed to reveal things that are hidden. [read more]

The images of Robert Mapplethorpe are what first drew me into photography about 15 years ago. I have vaguely heard the name because he had been in the news regarding controversy over some of his images being pornographic. It stirred the country and ignited a debate that went to court over weather his images were pornographic or just a means of expressing his art. [read more]

Whenever possible I love to pre shoot with potential subjects before I actually begin to design a shoot around them. [read more]

I woke up in a bit of a panic this morning. This time of year tends to create a lot of anxiety in me as I struggle with personal issues. It’s that time of the year when finances get tight as things slow down and we are still shut indoors due to yet another day of snow. Four years ago, this time of year, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma and had to spend a summer in chemotherapy. So every year, about this time, a remembrance of that fear begins to grip me and I am overwhelmed by my fear of some unforeseen impending doom as I am reminded of my mortality. [
