AFTERNOON DAYDREAM
Before this painting, my male paintings were more line based and were tighter. This artwork is different. I used larger brushes and applied the paint more freely. The paint was also thinned to a watercolour consistency.
The palette in this painting is different from my usual. Earthy tones are used. It is also a narrow spread of colour. My background is in design. I try to use elements from my training where appropriate. However design does not always translate simply to painting with regard to colour.
What I have found about this painting is that depending on the mood of the viewer, it is a man, lounging in afternoon shadows or for some it has a more erotic undertone. I like that it has that twin feeling to it.

A NEW TOMORROW
Male figurative paintings like any figurative work can be challenging. Sometimes bringing a different idea or aspect to the human figure can be difficult. In preparing for this painting, the model was chatting to me and discussing some ups and downs in his life. What struck me was his positivity toward the future. This is what I wanted to be the central theme of this male figurative painting. It was to be a painting with a positive edge and also about subtlty even though a tatoo features in the centre of the canvas.

AMERICAN PIE
American Pie is based on a man who I saw on Myspace some years ago. I asked him if I could use his photo and I was grateful that he said yes. A fine figure of a man, American, living in Scotland. I added some Klimt style decorative touches to the painting.

BACK (Male Study)
One of my first ever forays into premium quality coloured pencil, this artwork was really interesting to create as I found that I could really get into the detail of a muscled back. The pose is quite a classic one for me to use as many of my kilt-themed paintings and drawings feature a man with his hands on his head.

NEW BEGINNINGS
An oil painting about being exposed and how sometimes we can still be strong whilst starting again. Surrender is not always the weakest option. Some things in life are best when we walk away from them.

RESPECT
Respect was part of a series of paintings , Respect, Trust and Hope which were all to do with terms I had seen people use on social media in describing what they wanted from relationships.

SCALLY LAD
In the UK, a “Scally” lad is another term for a bit of a cheeky boy. It seemed an apt title for this painting. This is an early style for me from the mid noughts. I produced two paintings with this same subject. The Klimt Scally has a very obvious Klimt reference. This very graphic style piece in contrast is similar to much of my early artwork which is heavily influenced by my background in design.

STUDY FOR THISTLES
This paintings was a male study painted loosely in watercolour as a practice piece for a much larger oil painting. I like poses showing male figures who are physically strong but in poses which society may consider weak or overly sensitive. Challenging preconceptions and stereotypes is something that art can do in a subtle way.

THE THINKER
This was quite a large oil painting at 36 x 36 inches. It was part of a series which I painted before Scotland voted on wether or not to gain it’s Independence from the United Kingdom. It has other meanings too, as most of my pensive figurative art does but I like to leave the viewer to take any meaning that they want for themselves sometimes.

THREE WEE KILTIES
When I first painted a man wearing a kilt I did not expect the reaction it got. There are now Joe Hendry Kilt paintings hanging all over the world. Some people see them as sexy and some people find them humorous. I created this as a print as not everyone can afford original art and I believe that art is for everyone.

TO HAVE & TO HOLD
This was a large scale charcoal and graphite drawing. I had been working with a model who was a runner. He is trying to do 50 marathons all over the world by the time he is 50 years old. He had a great body for drawing and painting. He features in several of may artworks. This is all about masculine strength and being able to hold everything before you and own it as part of your life.

A DIFFERENT DANCE
This is my male/male version of Jack Vettriano’s wonderful painting “Dance Me To The End Of Love”.
Jack Vettriano is a painter whom I have admired for many years. If you have viewed his artwork then you will understand that it’s the atmosphere that he creates that I really love. .
A homage of Vettriano’s “Dance Me To The End Of Love., changing the colours slightly to suit my wishes and also removing the moon as that was deemed to take things just a shade too far.
The result was this original oil painting, Men like to dance together on beaches too.

BOY'S DON'T CRY
This is an oil painting of a friend of mine. He was going through a bad patch and I wanted to make good use of his mood. It might seem a bit selfish but I didn’t want to let such strong emotion go to waste! He was about 27 years old at the time I painted this although people think the figure in the artwork is younger. Perhaps it is just because you cannot see the face. The model has since told me he likes the artwork and it doesn’t remind me of sad times when he views it, which I am glad to hear.
